From April 11 to 13 of this year, the Pontifical Council on Justice and Peace, Pax Christi International, Maryknoll, and other international Catholic organizations gathered in Rome for a historic conference on Nonviolence and Just Peace. Its product was “An Appeal to the Catholic Church to Recommit to the Centrality of Gospel Nonviolence.”

In December 2014 in Vienna, the Holy See provided this statement to the Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons: “Nuclear Disarmament: Time for Abolition.”

Pope Francis, echoing his predecessors, says “Never again war!” But to change a culture of violence, he needs our help. We are grateful to all the individuals and organizations who have joined the 80 Rome conference participants by sending a clear message to our US bishops, underlining the Holy Father’s message to the world.

Thanks to their support, we will run this full-page ad with the names of over 300 signatories in the October 7 issue of the National Catholic Reporter, shortly before the U.S. bishops’ annual meeting in November.

Contributions we received above and beyond the cost of the ad will fuel our continuing campaign to move the Church from “just war” to Just Peace, including a presence at the bishops’ meeting. Last year we served up breakfast and information packets one morning, and hosted nine bishops and an abbot for bread and soup in a Baltimore church basement that evening, while the rest were the guests of the Military Archdiocese and its corporate sponsors. The Spirit is a-moving!
