Pax Christi Metro DC/Baltimore held a prayerful and celebratory evening of peace and remembrance on November 16, 2008 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Arlington, Virginia. We gathered to especially honor the six Jesuits of Central American University and their housekeeper and her daughter who were brutally assassinated by Salvadoran soldiers on the night of November 16, 1989. Pax Christi Ambassador of Peace, Fr. Joe Nangle celebrated our Mass, with music by the Our Lady Queen of Peace 11:15 Choir. The Mass also included a Commissioning of those people who traveled to the SOA Watch vigil on the weekend of November 21-23, at Fort Benning, Georgia and provided an opportunity for those in attendance to take the Pax Christi Vow of Nonviolence.
Following the Mass, the Peacemaker of the Year Award Dinner was held in the adjacent Father Ray Hall. The award was presented to the Catholic Worker Houses in the greater Washington, DC/Baltimore Metro Area (Dorothy Day House in Washington, DC, Viva House in Baltimore, Maryland and Little Flower House in Louisa, Virginia). The special guest speaker was the first Iraq War conscientious objector and faithful Catholic, former Staff Sergeant Camilo Mejía.
