Update on Iraq War Conscientious Objectors
May 30th, 2008
The Catholic Peace Fellowship alerts us to “Soldier Appeals to be Conscientious Objector” and “Judge Backs Christian Soldier’s Conscientious Objector Petition“, both by George Bryson for The Anchorage Daily News. These pieces tell the story of conscientious objector Pfc. Michael Barnes, a Fort Richardson-based paratrooper who had his request for CO status denied by the Army last year. “How would I justify to the Lord that participating in war is serving him?” Barnes wrote. “I cannot. War is evil, and nothing but evil comes from it. Many of those who participate in it lose their souls along the way.”
Courage to Resist continues to cover some of the more gripping stories of members of the military who are resisting the war. Currently featured are the stories of Iraq War resister Sgt. Matthis Chiroux, U.S. Army conscientious objector Robert Weiss who has been sentenced to 7 months confinement, and Army PFC Ryan Jackson, an imprisoned conscientious objector currently facing court martial.
