Catholic Mass and Gathering for Peace in Iraq
Christian Peace Witness for Iraq has called for a national day of prayer and witness for peace in Iraq, inviting people of faith from around the country to come to our nation’s capital on Friday, March 7th. Beginning with Christian denominational worship services around 8-10 sites in Washington D.C., there will be processions to the Capitol where we will be joined by sisters and brothers from the Jewish and Muslim traditions for an interfaith service and vigil.
The Catholic Mass will be held on March 7th at noon at St. Aloysius Church, North Capital and Eye Streets, NW. The presider will be Auxiliary Bishop Martin Holley of the archdiocese of Washington. Following the Catholic Mass at St. Aloysius, Joshua Casteel of the Catholic Peace Fellowship and Sister Ann Curtis, RSM will speak.
- Witness of War speaker Joshua Casteel enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves after graduation from high school, where he was both a football player and valedictorian. At 18, Joshua received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served as an interrogator at Abu Grahib prison in Iraq. This experience led him to convert to Catholicism and to apply for, and receive, and honorable discharge as a conscientious objector. Josh spent last March with other Catholic Peace Fellowship members in Rome, talking with Papal representatives about ways to stop this war.
- Sister Ann Curtis, RSM is on the leadership team of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. In January, Sister Anne joined a Catholic Relief Services delegation of solidarity with seven other women religious to visit Iraqi refugees in Syria and Lebanon. Sr. Anne has served on the staff of NETWORK and on the national council of Pax Christi USA.
