Holy Innocents Faith & Resistance Retreat
St. Stephen & the Incarnation Church,
16th & Newton Streets NW
Washington D.C.
Forced Migration — Take the child and flee…
- Jesus and his family were forced to flee to Egypt.
- Indigenous peoples of this land were forcibly banished in the trail of tears.
- 4.2 million Iraqis have been forced to flee home and/or country
- Millions are forced to flee environmental crises and resource wars due to resource depletion and climate change.
We bring their stories to the empire that decrees their plight
Responding to the Dream — Having been warned in a dream …they returned to their country by another route.
- The wise men’s dream charged them to resist the King’s order to spy on Jesus.
- Joseph was told in a dream to take his family and flee the violence of the empire.
- We are asked to hear God’s dream for this world by resisting evil and fleeing empire.
Commemorating the Massacre of Innocents
- We remember Herod’s massacre of the innocent of Bethlehem.
- We remember the 117th anniversary of the Wounded Knee Massacre. Indigenous peoples are and have been the gatekeepers of the last pristine places on Earth. They are given no rest in this culture’s idolatry of progress.
- We remember the massacre of the most innocent on the planet today.
- We grieve over the state of war in our world and the proliferation of more and more destructive weapons of war. Wars proliferate as nations – especially our own – vie to control the world’s last resources. They victimize the most vulnerable who bear the burden first – a consequence of our unsustainable lifestyle.
- All Creation cries out like Rachel under the strain of “progress”. Animals and vegetation suffer the consequences of our indifference, racing towards death in what scientists call the 6th mass extinction.
These rivers of blood start at the White House, the Pentagon, and the Department of Energy. We struggle to respond to the desperation of these times. If you can, share this sacred time with us…
